25 Years of WESt mbH – Supporting Regional Development in a Digital Age

In December 2025, WESt mbH marked its 25th anniversary, celebrating a quarter century of commitment to economic development, innovation, and cooperation in the district of Steinfurt. What began as a traditional public economic development office has evolved into a modern organisation supporting companies, founders, and municipalities in a constantly changing economic environment.

Over the past 25 years, WESt mbH has accompanied regional businesses through structural change, new market conditions, and increasing technological transformation. Alongside classic economic development tasks, topics such as innovation, knowledge transfer, and digitalisation have gradually gained importance. Supporting companies in adapting to new technologies and processes has become an integral part of strengthening the region’s competitiveness.

The anniversary year focused strongly on exchange and future perspectives. Under the motto “24 + 1 Lines for the Future”, WESt Managing Director Christian Holterhues visited companies in all 24 municipalities of the district. Entrepreneurs were invited to share their expectations for the future of the regional economy. Many highlighted the growing relevance of digital tools, efficient processes, and access to digital expertise, while also stressing the need for reliable networks and regional cooperation.

The collected statements illustrate a key insight: digital transformation works best when it is embedded in strong regional structures. Companies benefit not only from new technologies, but also from guidance, shared learning, and collaboration with research institutions and innovation partners. This is where initiatives such as DigiFabs provide valuable support by connecting businesses with expertise, infrastructure, and European innovation networks.

WESt mbH also contributed its own “+1” statement, emphasising that modern economic development means creating frameworks that enable innovation and adaptability. Digitalisation is understood as an important enabler – supporting productivity, sustainability, and new business models – while people, skills, and cooperation remain at the centre.

The 25th anniversary therefore represents more than a look back. It highlights WESt mbH’s role in helping the region navigate economic and digital change, and its commitment to shaping a resilient and future-oriented economy together with regional and European partners.
