Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS)

The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the Netherlands, with more than 44,000 students and 4,800 employees across seven faculties. Through more than one hundred undergraduate programs and practice-oriented research within seven faculties, AUAS is committed to addressing current social issues, to contribute to a sustainable, healthy and just city and world.

The AUAS is taking the lead in the research part of the project and will lay the foundation for the project by gathering insights from literature and from practice. Additionally, the AUAS has an important role in the conceptualization, pilot phase and optimization of the course program. Here there is also a role for the AUAS collaborative The Food Lab.

MEET THE TEAM

Ingrid Wakkee

Professor of Entrepreneurship

Ingrid Wakkee is the AUAS Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Amsterdam University of Applied Science. She is responsible for the AUAS entrepreneurship research programme and acts as scientific director of the Centre for Economic Transformation developing knowledge to accelerate the transformation towards a fair and sustainable economy. With her team, she is actively involved in multiple applied research projects in the field of (academic) entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship education and new business models. Wakkee’s work has been published in national and international scientific journals and edited volumes.

Key skills Ingrid brings to DIGIFABS include applied research management, transnational collaboration, valorisation and entrepreneurship.

Mike Russell

Track Lead (Investigation), Senior Researcher

Mike holds a Computer Science degree and Ph.D. in Man-Machine Interaction from the University of Wales, and an MBA from Nyenrode Business School in The Netherlands. At AUAS, he teaches undergraduate courses in technology and innovation, in addition to teaching Masters’ programs at the University of Northumbria on business and sustainability analytics. He runs several blockchain-related research lab projects and collaborates with colleagues on themes of mutual interest including the Metaverse, social entrepreneurship, digital transition, and sustainability.    

Key skills Mike brings to DIGIFABS include project management, applied technology insights, and valorisation of research outputs. 

Burcu Kör

Lead Researcher (Investigation), Senior Researcher

Burcu is a senior researcher at the Entrepreneurship lectorate of the Centre for Economic Change of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Burcu holds a Ph.D. in Management and Organisation. She has been a visiting researcher at the University of Texas in Dallas and the Open University of the Netherlands, focusing on innovative work behaviour, entrepreneurial orientation, and self-leadership. Additionally, Burcu is involved in projects that bridge theoretical insights with practical applications in innovation management. Her research contributes to understanding and supporting digital transformation processes in Dutch SMEs and integrating effective teaching of digital skills in entrepreneurship and innovation education. Her diverse research interests also include knowledge management, food waste, and cybersecurity. 

Key skills Burcu brings to DIGIFABS include applied research, data analysis, systematic literature review, and bridging theoretical insights with practical applications.

Lars Vierbergen

Lecturer-researcher in the Food Entrepreneurship and Product Development

Lars Vierbergen studied Food & Nutrition at the University of Applied Sciences and is currently working as a lecturer-researcher in the Food Entrepreneurship and Product Development related domain on the AUAS. Here he works primarily on food environment issues.

He is also involved in connecting practice, education and research in various food domains. As project manager of The Food Lab, he has been working with different food development-related assignments and connecting this with the AUAS Food and Nutrition education program to facilitate collaboration with students.

Maarten Kuiper

Lecturer-researcher in the Nutrition and Dietetics course

Maarten Kuiper is a lecturer-researcher at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, in the Nutrition and Dietetics course, specialising in sustainability & ethics of food production.

Trained as a historian with a specialisation in military history, he became interested in how power dynamics influence the world we live in. Not only between countries but also between the different parties in the food system.

Kees-Willem Rademakers

Lecturer and researcher in Logistics

Kees-Willem is a lecturer and researcher in logistics at AUAS. In the research program Urban Technology, he conducts research on agri-food logistics in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. He is currently coordinator of the Community of Practice “Food in the City”.

Kees-Willem has specialised in sustainable logistics, urban logistics, agri-food logistics, and hospitality distribution. He understands the interplay between (urban) logistics, technological innovation, regulations and the design of public space, as well as the interests of the various stakeholders within and alongside logistics chains.

Carolijn de Boer

Master student Global Sustainable Business Management

Carolijn is an enthusiastic Master’s student in the joint program of Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) and Northumbria University, pursuing a Master’s in Global Sustainable Business Management since September of last year. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Business from TMO Fashion Business School.

Since February 2024, Carolijn has been actively engaged in the DIGIFABS project. Her passion for sustainability drives her commitment to contributing to positive change within the sector. Within DIGIFABS, Carolijn leverages her project management skills and ability to translate research into actionable insights. She looks forward to collaborating on initiatives that drive digital transformation in the industry.
